David Bowie is...
Client: Victoria & Albert Museum
In David Bowie is... we celebrated one of rock music's most pioneering and experimental performers through a unique design collaboration with 59 Productions. Through a vivid, multi-media mixture of dramatic set design, storytelling and AV wizardry, the exhibition more than did justice to Bowie's fascinating creative evolution and mercurial talent.
The design successfully brought clarity and impact to an enormous and eclectic selection of objects – around 300 items selected by the V&A's curators from the David Bowie Archive in New York. Handwritten lyrics, drawings, film and video footage, costumes and set designs were broadly organised into two thematic wholes: the first gallery exploring the many identities of Bowie and his creative processes, the second showcasing Bowie the performer, on and off stage. The exhibition climaxed in a double-height space populated with Bowie's extraordinary costumes and overlaid with live footage – enabling the visitor to experience the atmosphere and energy of his stage shows and bringing Bowie the performer vividly to life.
